Retrospectively, Hotel Erzsébet has been synonymous with Budapest providing excellence in traditional industrial hospitality. The idea of building an unique downtown located hotel was originally formed in 1867. During that time, the hotel industry was the same profitable business as nowadays. As a result, new hotels were built besides the reconstruction works of the existing ones. Revolutionary new services were introduced such as the electricity, elevators and the establishment of "multiple lodging services".
On the 18th of April 1872, a local newspaper called "Fővárosi Lapok" heralded firstly the establishment of a new hotel in the heart of Budapest. The completion of the construction work was in May 1872 which coincided the time when Buda, Pest and Óbuda had been unified. The name was chosen after Queen Elizabeth.
In 1985, the hotel underwent a major reconstruction work which involved the expansion of guest room capacity, the installation of air-conditioning system and a modern exterior design has been introduced.
